‘Undefined behaviour’ - 2026

/Undefined Behaviour is a short digital experiement which uses motion capture data created during a performance by Lara Habib Kobeissi and directed by myself at CCIXR, the digital capture studio at the University of Portsmouth. This project invited a group of artist to the studio through Play Office to create experimental work using industry standard equipment and data.

The work I created was inspired by video game jank, looking at glitches like rubberbanding, ragdolling and clipping to then translate to the human body. Through the performance we developed a language of instruction inspired by the 2008 flash game ‘QWOP’ in which we assigned each limb with a number and used ‘plus’ or ‘minus to indicate forward or backward. This created a dance in which the movement of Lara was controlled through input and not instinct.

Using this data in Blender I created a digital dance in which the figure interacts with an environment reminiscent of early 2000s/2010s games with its repeating geometry and textures. By creating this narrative of rendered incorrectness inspiring physical movement to then be translated back into a digital environment I am exploring how this language of movement translates between realms.
