‘Artefact of gesture’ - Ongoing

/Artefact of Gesture is an ongoing physical and digital exploration looking at gesture as controller, object and symbol. The exploration stems from a small element from my exhibition 'In Touch In Ruin' where a ceramic grip moulded from my hand triggered the work. The idea of a small physical gesture unlocking an experience or story interested me to develop this line of thought further.

This first experiment was created from physical moulds of my grip made in clay that were then scanned into untextured digital forms. The work in this format displays the gesture as an archive of the body, of a moment, of a conscious act away from material contexts.

The archive was then translated through different materials such as plaster and wax. The allowed me to see how the context of these gestures changed. In plaster they became almost untouchable in their brilliant white and in wax they became symbols rather than activators. These different feelings through material is what I want to explore. How does material change how a viewer would interact? How does the material change in visual language?
